1609

Journal Entry: Tue May 13, 2008, 5:29 PM
Hello you costume gurus out there.

I would love some advise: I am commencing a project to create a French man and woman's outfit from 1609 and I'm a bit lost for where to start research. Does anyone have advise of books or websites?

thanks

oh, the dress form is called something like "my form" it's foam and you et a "skin" which you fit to yourself and then but onto the foam body. It's pretty handy.

Are you asking what kind of corset I have or something else? My stays are an 18th century style. They are comfortable because they are custom made but they are not so great for anything but 18th century wear...

Hey, I swear I saw a corset on a dress form on you site once, or maybe I was hallucinating. Anyways, I was wondering what kind you have, and if you like it. I want to buy one (that i could use with corset and corseted dresses), but I can't decide what kind.

Is is 60" wide? I think that is what I made my gown from, 5 yds of 60." (and had just enough to scrimp together a petticoat with some piecing in the back as well.)

If I recall correctly, 120" is the fuller end of the spectrum for 18th petticoats. Most people just use two panels of 60" which is handy, because all you have to do to leave pocket slits is neglect to sew the top 10"together.

Also, you can always use a contrasting petticoat if you run out of fabric...

curious, how much yardage is usually in an 18th century petticoat? i'm coming from the civil war world of 4+ yards in a skirt. i've got 5 yards of silk that i want to make into a robe a l'anglaise. is that enough for a round gown or will i need to go get petticoat fabric for an open gown?
