1805 Linen Morning Dress

Pale blue linen bib- fronted dress based on patterns in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion and Nora Waugh's The Cut of Woman's Clothes. The pattern was draped by me to mimic those in the books.

All sewing on this dress and it's undergarment was done by hand in the closest thing I could get to period techniques. Those undergarment's are a pair of transition stays (1795 to 1800), a short sleeved linen shift and a bodiced cotton petticoat. There is a small bustle pad attached to the interior of the dress by two eyelets and a lacing. (by small I mean about 4" by 3" ) It allows the fullness at the back of the gown to puff out just a little and give it the right look.

The decoration on the sleeves and bib is a very simple narrow lace which I sewed done in V patterns. I got the Idea from some pictures in The Cut of Woman's Clothes.

Blue Wool Spencer Jacket

The Spencer is a little bit more imagined than the gown. I didn't have one pattern to work from so I compiled what I knew and what I could see in photos and from the patterns I had. (this includes J. A.'s patterns of Fashion and the kyoto institute's costume book.) The jacket is lined with striped silk. The decorative buttons on the front are covered beads that my dad cut in half on his power saw for me.

The closure is hooks and bar-tacks. the hooks where hand made from brass jewelry wire.

This looks beautiful both clothes wise as well as photo wise. The composition, the story that the picture is telling really adds to the whole emotion. Could have even imagined it coming from some ol' age theme movie or just of from that time. :)

Of all the photos we took, this one is my mother's favorite. It did come out very "Jane Austen" didn't it?
:icongoldenspring:
We took these photos at this beautiful former estate that is really well maintained. We actually went into a part where we weren't supposed to be to take these because the place was covered in tourists (It's foliage season in VT)

Of all the recent photos this is most definitely the best! The composition is excellent and while it doesn't show all the technicalities of the dress it has a very period feel! :D

I still don't get why women's clothing had the waist pulled so high in the Regency period... :XD:

Yes, it did! And your mother's right about it. It's just something about the composition there and the clothes style with the nature around you actually complement each other even better like!

We strive for impracticalities in fashion whenever possible. XD
Me neither, I've never understood regency. I'm slowly learning to appreciate it though.
:iconsiman2000:
I have to say and this is no insult to you at all but to the fashion, I've always found the high waist most unflattering to a woman's figure, as you say I suppose you have to learn to appreciate it...

Yeah, I thought so for ages.

The dress looks amazing and this is such a gorgeous shot. You looked like you waltzed right our of a Jane Austen novel
