Artist's Comments
I made this shift to wear at French and Indian War (1750's and known in europe as the Seven Years War I think) reencatments. The difference between this shift and my old one is that the sleeves are both longer and fuller and are finished with a narrow cuff.
In the corner you can see a detail of the monograming in blue silk thread. Shifts are made entirely of geometrical pieces. the body is a giant rectagle from which narrow triagles were sliced on the top and then added to the bottom, making a trapazoid shape. The sleeves at 18" square (fyi: RevWar period sleeves are generaly more like 15" square) The underarm gussets are 6 inched square. The shift is made of plain white linen and is sewn with linen thread. The seams are backstitch (about 9-12 spi I think) and then flat felled with hem stitch. I would guess that this took me about 10 hours total, but as usual this could easily be way off. |
